I know that I have. My Shannon is going to be 11 on the 21st and she is growing up so fast. The time will come when that time of the month will start. Personally I don't think I want to deal with that. I think it is a personal choice that each parent has to decide what is best for them.

I have to find out what my options are.

If there is anyone with a Down Syndrome daughter that has gone through this I would appreciate any information.

I have been thinking a lot about Shannon's future and what life is going to hold for her. I was just talking to one of her brothers the other day about who would take care of Shannon if anything happened to her dad and I. She has three brothers and one grown sister and I am sure one of them would take care of her but I need to get it taken care of exactly who it is going to be.

C. I was asked about something that I didn't even know existed. It was about Down Syndrome dolls. My Shannon was not interested in dolls for a long time but she is now. She plays with regular dolls. I know that she is different but I don't treat her any different than I do my other daughter and that includes her toys. I don't want her to feel that she is substandard in any way. One particular post that had me smiling was when Shannon's dad cut her bangs and forgot to put the scissors out of reach. Like any other child, Shannon got the scissors and proceeded to give herself a 'little' trim on the top as well, and according to Carol, there wasn't much hair left!
Shannon may be a 'special needs child' but she is happy, well adjusted, won 'student of the month' at school and had her photo in the newspaper.
She's special because she has the capacity to love everyone and everyone loves her.
It comes across in Carol's writing, how much her child means to her.
I appreiciate this very much.
The "Arte y Pico" award was created and to be given to bloggers who inspire others with their creative energy and their talents, whether it be writing, artwork in all media's. When you receive this award it is considered a "special honor". Once you have received this award, you are to pass it on to at least 5 others.
Please read more info on this wonderful award , visit: http://www.arteypico.blogspot.com/.
I have to choose 5 bloggers that I consider deserving of this award for their creativity, design, posts, and contribution to the blogging community. The rules are as follows:
1) You have to pick 5 blogs that you consider deserving of this award, creativity, design, interesting material, and also contributes to the blogger community, no matter the language.
2) Each award has to have the name of the author and also a link to his or her blog to be visited by everyone.
4) Award-winning and the one who has given the prize have to show the link of " Arte Y Pico "blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award.
5) To show these rules.
This is going to be hard because there are so many that are good. Here are my 5
1. Shinade - The Painted Veil Shinade has some photos that are just beautiful. She has a beautiful blog and has already won one award for extraordinary blog. The graphics are just amazing.
2. Angel - Here and Now 4 Angel Angel blog about surviving childhood traumas are awe inspiring. The battle of triumphing over an eating disorder. It takes courage to face up to your problems and work through thme and share her thoughts and feelings about it.
3. Maitri- Magic and Moments at Dragonfly Cottage a writer, small press publisher and a fiber artist. She promotes animal welfare. She also promotes love and compassion. She donates portions of her income to help with animal welfare.
4. Lisibee- Margie and Edna's Basement This blog is based on humor. I love reading this blog as it always makes me laugh. Laughter is good for the soul and it is sure to fill you with joy.
5. Lynne - The Sewing Mom - Scrapbooking and fabric crafts are unique. I love her fabric purses. Colorful and bright.
Ladyhawkcj

C. As Out of the Box Reading, we traveled all over North America presenting free workshops to parents and children of Down syndrome. (We’ve had tremendous success in the US). Sadly however, Out of the Box Reading has recently closed its doors due to irreconcilable differences. I have continued on with the same product via a new name: eReadingPro. Our reading program follows a proven system of using a well organized and structured whole-word approach to teaching reading.
I invite you to check out our new site at: http://www.ereadingpro.com. I know you won’t be disappointed! Although we cannot officially post our Product page, you can have a sneak peak here: http://www.ereadingpro.com/products-tbu-temp.htm. Our daughter in laws family always does it every year and I was already going to let my daughter Melanie be in it. Yesterday morning at 7 am my husband decides we all was going to go. We got ready to go and met with everyone over at daughter in law Beth's parents house to finish decorating the float. The parade started at 2 pm and we finished decoraring and left to go get in line for the parade. Shannon sat on a stool next to me facing me and her back to the people on the streets. At first I didn't know if she was going to throw any beads or not. When things got started I found out quick enough. I would give her bead and she would throw them over head backwards and she didn't even look to see where they were going. I tried to get her to turn around but I guess she was to scared to turn. But she had a great time and she wasn't the only one. It is a nice family thing to do.
We are planning on doing it again next year.

C. We loaded up the girls in the car and had to drive about forty minutes to get where I had to go for the errand. Any way my husband drove by the theater to see what was playing and the times it started. We or rather my 11 year old decided that we was going to see Spiderwyck. We paid and went and got our popcorn and drinks ( to bad we can't bring our own it would be cheaper). We went to the theater room to get our seats and I like to sit up high so I could see better. Shannon sits down and waits for the movie to start. She does real good when we go places but especially movies because she loves movies. When we are at home she will play her favorites although she can't read them she knows which ones they are. She is learning more words and you can hear her when she is singing along with the radio. She and I will play the radio coming home from school and we will sing along together. She gets tickled and starts laughing and when she starts laughing I find myself laughing with her. She is such a joy to me.

Ladyhawkcj

C. Most people believe that when a child has Down Syndrome that they are all alike. They are not because they are individuals that have their own character and problems. There are different degrees of Down's. In Shannon's case she has a mild type. Although they do have facial characteristics that are alike like the shape of the eyes their faces are individual. Some Down's children have heart conditions and have had to have surgery. Shannon had two holes in her heart when she was born but we were blessed that they closed up on their own without surgery. I know that some people assume that they are all heavyset. Shannon is not and so far she does not have to wear glasses. She does have hypothyroidism and she has to have her blood work checked periodically, ( which she does not like ). The one thing that they all have in common is their capacity for love. Everyone that Shannon comes into contact with says hello to her ( the ones that don't know her ). Or they will say hey Shannon ( the ones that do know her ). That girl knows more people than I do. When she comes to me and tell me "I ove you "and gives me a kiss she just makes me feel so great inside. She has just recently learned how to say her own name. She can be stubborn also but she gets it honestly.

C. She knows that she can go to the pantry and get it and open it. She likes to eat it with a spoon. Yesterday she had gotten her a can of potted meat and opened it and she started hollering and come running to me. She had gotten the opening ring stuck on her finger and couldn't get it off. I thought it was kind of funny. She wasn't to happy having that lid stuck on her finger. I got it off of her and she went on to eat her potted meat. We get dressed and leave to go to Wal Mart to get some snacks. Shannon's brother and wife and son are going with us but in their car. We meet at Wal mart and by the time we get gas and everything it is close to 10 am. We get to Biloxi about 11 am to get a good parking spot and you should have seen the traffic. It was unreal bumper to bumper.
We finally get there and got a great spot only to find out from this lady passing by that the parade was not going to go by where we at. Well pulled our cooler and walked down the road a liitle bit and foung another good spot right close to city hall. We had to wait until 1p before the parade and the kids were already getting tired of standing not to mention me.
They had the roads barricaded so you could not get to the floats close by which was good in a way no one got ran over. The parade is starting and Shannon does want to wave her arms to get anything at first butshe got the hang of it real fast. She was jumping up and down and waving them arms like a pro.
The parade lasted for two hours and by the time it was over we had two grocery bags full and mine and Shannon's neck was loaded down with beads. We left there and went to my daughter in laws parents house so that we could rest and take a bathroom break and wait to leave to go to the night parade which started at 5:30 pm.
The night parade was not going to be as long as the day parade but it had cooled off and was damp and the roads were not barricaded. We parked there right at the road in parking spots and let the tail gate down on the truck to sit on and to stand on to catch the beads. When the parade was over we had gotten another bag full of beads.
We left to go home and Shannon fell asleep on the way. We had put in a long day and she was tired. We got home a little after 8 pm and they got a bath and went to bed. It was a fantastic day and when we asked Shannon if she had fun she says yeah.

C. Shannon has this thing that when she gets a bath and you wash her feet she likes to have the bottoms of her feet tickled. She won't let you just wash her feet they have to get that tickle tickle in. When she first got in the jacuzzi tub she didn't like it but she has learned that when you have bubbles and turn the jacuzzi on it makes more bubbles. I look at her and I can just feel the love bursting up through me. She has such a good sense of humor and you can't help but laugh. She can dress herself pretty good but sometimes she can come up with a pretty wild ensemble. Her favorite thing to wear when it is cold is a camouflage jumpsuit. She loves to be outside and swing on her swingset or jump on the trampoline. She is in bed now and I don't have a hard time to get her in bed. I just tell her it is night night time and she grabs my hand and I take her to bed and cover her up. She has just started since Christmas wanting her baby doll in bed with her. well good night for now.

Ladyhawkcj

C. Although we have our other daughter whom we love very much. It is special with Shannon. We know that eventually our other daughter will be grown and go out on her own. Shannon on the other hand will be with us for a long time. Shannon has her daddy wrapped around her little finger. He tries not to show it but its there. It is only natural because although she is independant in a lot of ways but she depends on us alot too. She does something and looks at her daddy and smiles and you can't help but laugh. We treat her like the others but I think we do let her slide a little bit. She loves her daddy a lot and loves to ride on the four wheeler and the tractor with him. You can hear her laughing and it just makes want to you smile and laugh too. We wonder about her future alot about who will take of her when we're not here. But she has 2 sisters and 3 brothers that will do it. I somehow think it will be Melanie because she is closer to her. Anyway that is all in the future so I am not going to dwell on it right now. Well I am going to go I have to put Shannon to bed as she has school tomorrow.

ladyhawkcj

C. I just wanted to say that last month Shannon made student of the month and got her picture in the newspaper. I saw the award that she brought from school but I had no idea that it was going to be in the paper. I was coming to work last friday night when my niece called me and told me that Shannon's picture was in the paper. I stopped by the store and picked up a paper and sure enough she was there. It was neat to see her there. I put a new background on my blog so I am having to redo it. Shannon also has a new haircut. Her Dad trimmed her bangs and forgot and left the scissors on the bar. Needless to say Shannon preceded to cut her hair on the top of her head to where she almost didn't have any hair left. She makes me laugh, can be a pain in the backside but she is an original and I love her. She loves riding on the four wheeler and the tractor with her Daddy. She has a bicycle but I somehow don't think she is ever going to learn to ride it before she gets to bigt for it. She just now is getting into baby dolls. Well gonna go for now.

Ladyhawkcj

C. The tooth fairy came but it didn't mean anything to Shannon. In case any one is wondering about the you tube. It is a song called I'm a Gummy Bear. I took my daughter Melanie to see that movie The Waterhorse and they played that song on the screen before the movie came on. I like it so I found it and put it here. Oh yeah if you haven't seen the movie Waterhorse you should it is a good movie. I want to see the Chipmunks next. When was the last time you went to the movies? It is fun but expensive when you start buying all your snacks and drinks. Too bad we can't bring our own popcorn and drinks. I would have brought Shannon to the movie too but she wasn't feeling to good. When you have a child that can not tell you what they want that makes it a little harder in trying to figure out what she wants. That is where knowing your child comes handy. Shannon loves music and movies. Right now it is Nanny MacPhee and believe you me she knows her movies. When she has a favorite she will play that movie over and over and over again. She was watching Thumblelina the other day and she was singing with the song that was playing on it. I was tickled because there was new words she was saying. she will get up sometimes and dance too. That is a site to see. Shannon makes me laugh and I just want to hug her and kiss on her all the time. Well it is time to go for now. I would appreciate any ideas for Christmas. Oh yeah I put my Christmas tree up last week and my 10 year old daughter and I decorated it and guess what Shannon did the next day. She removed most of all the ornaments. Needless to say she does not mess with the tree again.
So long for now

C. They told me she is just laying her head down on the table and she normally just doesn't do that. Well I go and get and bring home and she is not sick at all. She gets something to eat and turns the tv on and gets me to start her favorite movie that she likes to watch on. I went to school This past Monday and told them that Shannon is not sick. It can be one of several things, She is tired because she is having to get up earlier to catch the bus, her allergies are acting up and I have given her medicine, or she has just learned that if she puts her head down they are going to call me and she is going to get to come home. I don't think she likes her teacher and she can't tell me in words but in actions. I may be wrong but sometimes it is hard to figure out what she wants. Tell me what you think. Do you think that she has just learned what will get her to come home or not? Shannon had a great time. When Shannon goes up to get the candy and hold her bag out. She continues to hold her bag out like that's not enough give me more. There were several people that would give her a handful of candy when they saw that she had Downs. One lady said this is for you because you are special and God's gift. I agree with that because she is God's gift us. At first we would have to walk with her but then we let her go and follow the other kids that was with us. She would look back and make sure of where we were and keep on going to get her candy. It was about 9 pm when we got done and she was tired out that she fell asleep in the car on the way home. If you are interested to see what she looks like her pictures will be posted on myspace site pretty soon.
http://myspace.com/ladyhawkcj
ladyhawkcj

C. When you have a handicapped child there is a program called The Early Intervention in which they work with your child up till they are 3 years old. Then your child will start going to a regular elementary school in which they have special classes for handicapped children. They have speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy come in and work with your child. Shannon has a sister that is a year older than her so she had great motivation in wanting to get around. When the workers from the early intervention program would start a new area to work on Shannon would do it on her own with our help until she could do it on her own. It takes a down syndrome child longer to be able to do the things that normal children would do. We were tickled just to see her sitting up on her own. She had to learn about eating with a spoon and drinking from a cup which is working fine motor skills. It took a long time in her to master her skills but when she did she was happy and we were happy also. When it came to learning how to stand and walk once she she mastered that then she was running. Even now when I see her running I get tickled because she doesn't run like everyone else but she does run and it is funny to watch her. She is now starting to talk a little more but I remember when she was younger she would get up on the kitchen table and point her finger at me and her daddy and just jabber away. I told my husband that I wonder what she was saying but it might be better for her that we didn't. We treat Shannon just like we do out other daughter. She is very smart she might not be able to read but she knows which movies she likes to watch. I think she goes by the picture on the case. She loves anything with music and dancing in it. I guess this enough for one day.

Ladyhawkcj

C. After the pediatrician examined her it was determined that 1. she had down syndrome, 2. she had 2 holes in her heart. 3. they thought she had leukemia, 4. she was born 2 weeks early and she couldn't eat without turning blue. She was sent to Womens and Childrens hospital in Mobile Alabama to receive treatment. After several blood tests and bone biopsy it was determined that she did not have leukemia but had what they called Transient Myloproliferative Disorder in which you have numerous amount of immature white blood cells but after awhile she started to produce mature white blood cells but we still have to monitor that because they said that later in life it could develop into leukemia. By the time that she was a year old the holes in her heart closed on their own. After 2 weeks in the hospital she was able to eat a certain amount in a certain amount of time. Through all the problems and tests that she had she maintained a smiling and loving dispostion. She is my heart, my angel, and my inspiration. This is all for today.
Ladyhawkcj

C. Maybe have one in their family or knows someone that does. I just want to say from experience that a down syndrome child is one of the most lovable people in the world. I sometimes think about my daughter Shannon would I want her to be a normal child without the difficulties that she has?
I would have to say no I would not her to be a so called normal child in the fact that she would not be who she is now and I love her the way she is. This site was created for her. I wanted to share what it is like being her mother, and also if anyone has questions I can answer from my experiences. This is a short to start with but I will have plenty to say about her. So keep in touch.
Ladyhawkcj

C.
